Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men; approximately one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. In Spain, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed tumor among men, according to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM). It tends to develop more frequently in older men. If prostate cancer is detected at an early stage, limited to the prostate gland, it has a good chance of being cured with proper treatment. Prostate cancer usually develops slowly, however, there are other more aggressive types that can spread rapidly. For this reason, early detection is the best weapon to fight it. Among the most widely applied treatments in our united states we can highlight:
- Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy
It is a surgical technique used in cases of prostate cancer and allows the removal of the prostate gland. This intervention is based on the separation of the prostate from its neighboring organs (the urinary bladder and the urethra) in order to remove it. The reconstruction of the urinary tract is then required, connecting the urinary bladder to the urethra. The procedure involves making several small incisions, through which special long instruments are inserted to remove the prostate; one of the instruments has a small video camera on the end that allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen.
-Robotic Surgery with the Da Vinci System
It is the most advanced surgical system currently available to perform the most complex interventions, including prostate cancer, through a minimally invasive approach. Its use provides the surgeon with greater safety in the surgical technique, which represents a great benefit for the patient, who faces a less traumatic intervention, with minimal incisions, less bleeding, a less painful and faster postoperative period, with a shorter hospital stay and a faster and better return to normal life than expected.
